Have you ever been to a concert where you’ve never heard of the band?
Well at the weekend Josh, our girls and I did just that! We went to the Walmart AMP in Rogers, Northwest Arkansas to see a double feature concert of Straight No Chaser and Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. The Walmart AMP is an outdoor live music venue that seats 7000 people and we are fortunate that it’s 10 minutes from home. I booked the tickets on a whim after a very random Google search. My daughter Kate is a fabulous little singer and she and her sister Isabelle have really enjoyed watching the Pitch Perfect films and singing along. The films have sparked an interest in us all for a cappella music. After watching Pitch Perfect the a cappella choirs we have seen just don’t quite meet our expectations! Pitch Perfect is just a bit too perfect dare I say it!
So I typed into Google ‘best a cappella group in USA’ and Straight No Chaser popped up in my results. On the same page there was a date at the Walmart AMP a few months ahead so I just booked it! Without research or consultation with the rest of my family. It wasn’t until lunchtime on the day of the concert that we sat down at the table together and did some research on who we were about to see. Then we were excited! It felt as though we’d given ourselves a surprise evening to look forward to.
Straight No Chaser are an all male professional a cappella group who were performing a double bill with Postmodern Jukebox who are described as a rotating music collective who play vintage and jazz versions of modern songs. It was in fact a triplebill as sing-a-song writer and fabulous jazz pianist Jon Mclaughlin opened the show.
Luckily the rainstorms that had been lingering all day cleared up and we were treated to a beautiful evening of unseasonably mild temperatures and low humidity (most unlike the very hot and humid weather that is normally here in August!).
Well, we were not to be disappointed. In fact we were blown away with how amazing an evening we had! Considering we didn’t really know what to expect this was one of the best evenings of live music we’ve been to! Both groups were fantastic and Straight No Chaser exceeded our live a cappella expectations- the best real life a cappella group we’ve seen! Better than the movies! My daughters who have been lucky enough to go to a few concerts said this was their best concert ever! They were downloading music from both groups first thing the next morning.
Try something new and different when you get the chance. We have discovered new music that we love and that made us all smile!
